Special Joint Board Of Education/Personnel Commission Meeting


The Board of Education and the Personnel Commission congratulated Maria Lomelin on being named the "2022 Teacher of the Year" for Monrovia Unified School District. Community and family members filled up the boardroom seats to show their support for Ms. Lomelin receiving this award. Congratulations to our 2022 teacher of the year!

Recognitions


The Monrovia Unified Board of Education invited students from Bradoaks Elementary to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at its November meeting. Marilynn Vega did a fantastic job starting our Board meetings.

The Board of Education welcomed Angel Arias as the next principal at Canyon Early Learning Center. Ms. Arias is a familiar face over there, having served the school for nearly ten years as both a special educator and a teacher on assignment.  In addition to her experience in Monrovia, she has served as an instructional aid in another school district as well as a recreation leader for the City of Pico Rivera.

Actions Taken by the Board of Education


The Board of Education approved a contract with Capturing Kids' Hearts for professional development for district staff for the 2022-23 school year. Capturing Kids' Hearts® equips professionals in K-12 education to implement transformational processes focused on social-emotional well-being, relationship-driven campus culture, and student connectedness.
 
The Board ratified the renewal of a General Service Agreement with Care Solace, Inc. for a district license to access an online platform at caresolace.com, effective July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. The resource provides 24/7 help for students with mental health and substance use challenges.
 
Board members approved an agreement with Food ED for the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) Garden Revitalization Program at Monrovia High School for the 2022/23 school year. This agreement aims for Food ED to partner with the high school’s numerous clubs and environmental classes to spearhead an outdoor learning program for general education students. 
 
The Board of Education approved the Memorandum of Understanding with the Colton-Redlands-Yucaipa Regional Occupational Program for a partnership in the Career Technical Education Teach Mentor Grant Program in 2022-23. CTE TEACH involves administrative supervision overseeing the use of Mentor Teachers to provide structured training for beginning CTE educators, as well as technical assistance and informal observation intended to guide and support the new teacher related to the training.
 
The Board approved the Professional Learning Contract between Ed Consulting CSC and Monrovia Unified School District for professional learning (PL) sessions focused on Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) for the term of November 10, 2022, through June 30, 2023. The PL sessions will provide teachers with strategies to improve students' understanding of essential math concepts and problem-solving strategies. Research shows that CGI increases students' conceptual understanding, problem-solving ability, self-confidence, and math achievement.
 
Board members approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Goodwill East San Gabriel Valley America's Job Center of California (ESGV AJCC) and Monrovia Community Adult School (MCAS) to provide comprehensive Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) services to MCAS students and regional adults for the term November 10, 2022, through June 30, 2025. This agreement will provide MCAS with Case Managers to help job seekers access education, training, and support to succeed in the labor market and connect businesses with the skilled workers they need.
 
The Board of Education approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Monrovia Community Adult School to provide professional quality, short-term Peer Support Specialist training programs for Monrovia Community Adult School student to earn a California Mental Health Services Authority certification as a Peer Support Specialist for the term of November 10, 2022, through June 30, 2025.

Developer Fee Annual and Five-Year Report - David Conway, Director of Fiscal Services


The board received a report regarding the district's developer fees. Developer fees are intended to be used for the construction and reconstruction (modernization) of school facilities to accommodate students from new development.
