good evening and welcome to the reopening elementary schools webinar Avanti president of the Monrovia Unified School Board of Education thank you for joining us tonight we know how busy everyone is but also know how important it is to all of you as parents and Guardians to hear about the reopening plans for our element with me this evening is Vice President Celine Lockerbie board clerk Tracy gholar board member Jennifer Anderson and board member Rob Hammond this has been an incredibly challenging time for all concerned weather you are a student parent guardian or other family member helping out a teacher or administrator you have felt the strain of this pandemic doctors in Kaiser will be introducing our elementary school task force which consisted of parents teachers administrators and representatives from the employee associations who spent countless hours working on a schedule and putting together a plan that adheres to the guidance provided by the Los Angeles Department of  we are true thankful for their efforts and commitment to our students thank you and now I'll turn it over to doctor Kaiser thank you board president travanti I want to take a moment before I go through our Marvel task force and also think our Board of Education who has given countless pointers on guidance and direction to us as we went through some Waters that we were very unfamiliar with and so next LED lights reference the art ask for a slide please next time on this side what we see is that every school was represented from our district every Elementary School and of the elementary schools we principal we had a teacher and a parents or teams were very balanced and we made sure that we had processes in place where voices to be heard from all of our stakeholders that this was a process and it wasn't something that we just went into a room and created a schedule in 30 minutes and brought it out but it was over many many meetings it reach an hour long and I'm working so I'd like to go to the next slide and talk a little bit about our a zoom webinar our form at 4 tonight should you have any questions we'd like you to post them in the Q&A feature on Dish webinar responses to frequently asked questions will be posted on our district website under the covid-19 information tab on the district homepage a recording of this presentation she will also be made available I'd like you to take a moment now and see the Q&A button on the bottom ribbon on your computer's that's where you post your questions so I asked presentation unfolds tonight should questions occur to you please type them into the Q&A and those that is where we will take a look at those questions and provide answers to every question if we have duplicate questions many people will it will have the same question there will be those will be clumped together and will indicate how many asked that question as we give the answer next light please the first thing that I'd like to start with tonight is as we looked at the work of the task force there were several pieces that were parameters that we considered and as we're moving forward into the reopening of school we are mindful of parameters we are looking at right now the public health recommendations for opening schools first thing that our business department and our our maintenance department has done is they have replaced our filters with Merv 13 filters which are the filters that are recommended by the health department to make sure that our air is clean and sober free the heating ventilation and air conditioning has been maintained and it it's been a Lotus been taken out it to make sure again that the circulating air that we will be clean air in our classrooms and our office areas plexiglass has been installed in our school reception areas touchless bottle filling stations have also been installed sanitizing stations are installed and we have are providing personal protective equipment for our employees the district will send each site the necessary additional personal protective equipment when students return which will include hand sanitizers mask face Shields gallons for our health staff and gloves to any employee upon request and this information is from the musd Cal OSHA safety plan that it was revised on February 23rd 2021 as well as the covid-19 school. as we get more information from the health department this list may change we are attempting to stay very current with our health department and we check on a daily basis for the updates Cliffside please so in a little history on our task force we convened as a task force for the first time in the spring of 2020 that was last a year ago from next month we considered a model to return to school in the event that we would return in the fall of 2020 and we consider the two cohort model where half of the sea would come in the morning and the other half would come in the afternoon that was the first thought that we had next slide please and looking at that we also surveyed our families to see what good the interest was in our community and the families and the children are those that we serve and so what we looked at was if we were able to come back how many families would want to send their children back and how many would like to remain in distance learning in July 2020 we had 37.4% of our families that responded to the survey said that they would like to maintain the remote learning experience stay at home and 62.6% of our family said that they would like to participate in having their children on campus at least part of the time Nick's light please then we also looked at in July 2020 what type of hybrid model the families would prefer and as we looked at that you can see from this pie graph it was a split about half and half that families would like to have their children attend a half-day or attend two full days and still receive those it would like to have their students maintaining the distance learning or those families had no preference next slide please we looked at the the model that we were considering at that time we looked at issues that having the half day 4 days a week what it would have and the first issue that we saw it said it would be impossible to get all the classrooms cleaned in between cohorts and that is one of the conditions of the health department the deck cleaning happens in between the number of students on campus and a given day also posed a bit of a problem in a threat and then looking at her how would we distribute food with having children coming and going in the number that we would have and then we learned that we would remain in distance learning we had a little bit more time to take a look some other models next slide please so in January 20-21 we surveyed our families again and we saw that 57% wanted to have come back in a hybrid model .5% preferred an independent study model which occurs at Mountain Park School and 42% would like to continue in distance learning next please and so our chance for a streak that Will was reconfigured and we reconvened the composition of the task force consisted of parents from each School teachers from each School cited Strader's classified employees a board member liaison and District administrators Best Buy please we set parameters the very first thing that was stated in every meeting is that children are the first consideration what is going to best meet the needs of our students given the situation that we're in right now the second thing was and high interest to all on the task force was developing a model that had some continuity of the program design that were using right now and distance learning the things that are working how can we pull those across dial to a hybrid model according to our Senate bill that we were following and the governor's directives daily contact with teachers for all students so how do we build that in for everybody I'm student-to-student interaction daily and then maintaining class rosters and teacher-student relationships we did not want to have a situation where we were mixing children and a Sentry assigning them two new teachers this late in the year it doesn't make sense and it would not be good for children and then we also need to have adequate time for our teachers to meet and plan because these challenges are big for our teachers ensuring adequate time for cleaning in between cohorts and always having the safety in the covid-19 environment that were in nips by please so we looked at five different models in terms of investigating them and these models were models that we found other districts considering I mean we began to look at him to not to just adopt a model that somebody else has thought of but to use it creatively for chemists inform our decision-making and so the first model that we investigated was a Navy model where it was had 50% of the students on the campus 2 days a week and 50% of the students learning via Virtual Academy on alternating days or consecutive days and then looking at this we couldn't figure out how to do it without mixing children at and assigning them to different teachers and then the model that we have looked at AMPM and we've already talked about the drawbacks from that and then the a bi-weekly cohort 50% of the students come to the campus or days a week and the other 50 are at home woman the alternate weeks when we looked at this it would be 10 days without seeing their teacher and that was just too many days and then one cohort every 3 weeks was another model that we saw and this was one that was pretty rapidly dismissed and then we also looked at an ABC or an ABCD model where each cohort was on campus one day a week while the others were virtually and again the the continuity of learning was very important to our team next fight scene so this is the the model the team came up with I'm through looking at the pros and cons of the other model they were able to look at what really matters and so you'll see in this model that 100% of the students in the class will continue in distance learning from 8:30 to 11 in the morning and this creates that continuity of teaching and learning for the teachers feel that they could really come together and with their their children and really get the best being out of their back during that morning time and then you'll notice that there is a large. Of time from 11 to 12:30 we have lunch and student travel time and the the team felt that the families needed a little bit more time than our lunch that we're having right now and are just learning schedule because they need to close up shop at home they need to feed their children and they needed then get their children to school and so that is a longer. Of time and for our teachers it also Supply some bland mean time and then from l-32 231 group of children will come to school daily to learn with their teacher in the classroom on Wednesdays they will be doing a synchronous work or work at home via many videos that we have had created by credentialed teachers that are actual teaching videos it's not just more homework but they're teaching videos and then on Thursday and Friday. It would be cool Court B and cohort a would be doing some more asynchronous work which are teaching videos and work that is assigned by the teacher that moves the students along in the students that are in distance learning fee time from that 12:30 to 2:30. They would be learning at home doing their asynchronous work next please I'm going to nail hand this over to Caitlin and I realize that I just did your slide Caitlin no problem no problem I'd like you to fill in any apps that I have in that know you did a great job at Mayflower elementary so I'm going to be present in a slight about the advantages of the elementary high model that the task force came up with the first one is constantly continuity with students and their current teacher the next one is student-teacher relationship remains intact the next one is student sure and student-to-student daily interaction so this model really did provide the most teacher time to all students next would be the flexibility for teachers and planning time this was that concerned so we wanted to make sure that teachers ample planning time to get all their lessons ready the next one was flexibility to plan synchronous asynchronous large and small group lessons using morning and afternoon and then the next one was adequate time cleaning in between the Cold War and then the final Advantage would be safety and number of in-person students and social distancing did you want me to read the next one sewer are we are we would be on site 17 no I'm sorry you know yes you you may do the next one that would be great so so you're actually good evening I'm Greg Giraldo the principal at Plymouth Elementary School I wanted to but there are a number of terms used in the model that can be confusing so wanted to take a moment to Define some of the key terms we use the term synchronous learning which means that it's learning that takes place in real time with interactions between the students and the teacher or between the students a good example of this is daily Zoom sessions at our teachers host when we say asynchronous learning describes learning that's without direct simultaneous interaction between participants so some examples might be the videos or pre. construction like doctor Kaiser was describing that students can access at a designated time I'm so distance learning as we currently have it includes both synchronous and asynchronous components and in person would be a by definition synchronous learning so hopefully that will clarify the schedule as we look at it so I want to break down The Daily scheduled we know that for parents what's most important often is what is the day look what's the day look like for my child and how might that impact our family so in this model the morning begins with the whole class and it provides an opportunity for the teacher to set the tone and prepare all the students for success full day of learning their recess break is maintained as we currently have it and lunch there is there's an extended. For lunch to provide ample time for students who who are in the in-person cohort to travel to campus and also have time for lunch Grab & Go breakfast and lunch would continue to be served in this model just the way it is now between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at our sites although the students would still eat their meals off campus and then the in-person cohorts meet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. one thing I want to point out is that that that in person there's a possibility during that time that teachers can continue to work with students at home when we consulted with teachers about this model some of them felt that they would be able to teach the students in person and still maintain some synchronous learning or some synchronous teaching with the students at home other teachers felt that this wouldn't be feasible that it might be too difficult to manage and so for now it's simply an option or a possibility that the students at home might receive some more synchronous support since they would be missing out on the in-person time next slide please Wednesday's would have a mod fight schedule similar to the schedule that we currently have on Fridays for the mornings are identical to the other days of the week but what's different is the afternoon would be a time for asynchronous learning for all students which provides time for our teachers to plan to prepare and to collaborate next slide please one of the considerations when we develop this model was to look at the amount instructional time provided for our students so in our current distance learning model students have approximately 16 hours of synchronous time or time with the teacher and classmates were there simultaneously in talking with them and approximately 5 hours of asynchronous work for the in-person cohorts in this model they would have approximately 14 hours of time with the teacher and classmates of synchronous time and 4 hours of that would be actually in person on campus and about six hours of asynchronous work for students who were the students who would be at home whose parents opt for 100% distance learning would have 10 hours of synchronous time with the teacher and 10 hours of asynchronous work however as I described in the previous slide there's potential for more time or synchronous time with the teacher if the teachers able to provide so we don't know yet so it could be that these students would get more synchronous time and unless asynchronous time next slide please so our next step are to finalize the schedule and to submit it for board approval and of course to prepare to continue preparing our school sites for the safe return to school at some of those things include making sure that we have a red signage for safety protocols making sure that furniture tables and chairs are placed appropriately in our classrooms are removed that we have clear cleaning protocols developed that we have entrance exit protocols in place to ensure the health and safety of our students and we would the next step would be the send a commitment form to parents requesting for your choice whether you opt for your child to participate in the hybrid model in person or to maintain a hundred percent distance learning or to opt for the independent study program through Mountain Park School once we know what the what the numbers look like then we can determine the capacity and the level of Need For The Learning pods that we currently have and see how those might be adjusted and we can also will also be able to assign students to the appropriate code next slide please you want to thank you for your participation I'm as Doctor Kaiser stated a great deal of time and effort went into developing the model with input from parents teachers classified staff administrators and District leaders and clearly there's no perfect model or one that will meet the wide variety of interest and preferences however we worked hard to keep safety and the education of our students at the center and we look forward to hearing your feedback as a reminder this webinar has been recorded and will be available on the district website as well as answers to the frequently. questions submitted during this presentation thank you again stay well and good night
