Supporting Our Neurodiverse Students (SB 939)

At Monrovia Unified School District, we are committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for every learner. We recognize that every student’s brain works differently—and those differences are a strength.

"Neurodiversity is not a deficit to be fixed; it is a natural human variation to be celebrated."

What is SB 939?

California Senate Bill 939 (passed in 2024) is a law designed to protect and support neurodiverse students. Neurodiversity is an umbrella term for students who think, learn, and experience the world in diverse ways. This includes students with:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Dyslexia
  • Other Learning or Thinking Differences

Your Child’s Rights

Under SB 939, neurodiversity is a protected characteristic. This means:

  1. Anti-Bullying Protection: Your child has the right to an education free from bullying, harassment, or intimidation based on their neurodivergence.
  2. Access to Resources: Our district is required to provide families with high-quality, state-approved tools to help recognize, prevent, and respond to bullying.
  3. Informed Staff: School staff are provided with specialized training to better understand and support the unique needs of neurodiverse learners.
